Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government today said that it has taken back the land provided to mega banking scam accused Nirav Modi, who had proposed to set up Geetanjali Gems Park near Baranga in Cuttack district.
It was informed by the Odisha Industries Minister Ananta Das while briefing media about the ‘Make in Odisha’ conclave scheduled from November 12 in Bhubaneswar.
The money which he had deposited for the project was also attached, the Minister added. The development comes ahead of the ‘Make In Odisha’ meet.
Earlier in April, the government also announced that it has scrapped the Rs 636-crore gems Jewellery park to be set up by the Geetanjali group in Cuttack.
Sources said Geetanjali group had earlier been allotted 30 acres of land near Baranga in Cuttack for the manufacturing unit to be set up in the name of Geetanjali Gems.
The government decided to scrape the project as there is no one from the company with whom the government can interact to step up the project after diamond merchant Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi who owned the Geetanjali group left country after being accused of perpetrating country’s biggest banking sector scam of around 13,000 crore at Punjab National Bank.
