Lightning fear: Odisha Govt prohibits student’s participation in I-Day parade

Bhubaneswar: School students will not be allowed to take part in the official ceremonial parade during Independence Day celebration tomorrow in view of IMD forecast of heavy rain and lightning.

Keeping children’s safety in view, Odisha government has barred the students to participate in parade in State, district or sub-divisional level ceremonial parade.

“My concern is lightning should not strike children, so let’s keep the Independence Day functions to the minimum… I don’t know how to reduce it though,” said CM Naveen Patnaik while reviewing flood and rain preparedness at the Secretariat in Bhubaneswar

“As IMD has predicted that very heavy rainfall accompanied by lightening to occur at many places, the observance of Independence Day at Official Parades is restricted to the participation by Police and Para Military Contingents only and the parade may not consist of Children,” Odisha Home department tweeted.

In a letter to the Revenue Divisional Commissioners (RDCs) and all Collectors, the Home Department also restricted the students from taking part in any cultural or sports activities on the occasion. The Collectors have also been asked to take adequate precautions to ensure safety of the guests and the participants during celebration.

Notably, the weather department has predicted heavy rain accompanied by lightning in most parts of the State tomorrow due to a low pressure area over Bay of Bengal.
