Man killed by Kumki elephant Yosada in Satkosia

Angul: The kumki elephant called Yosada which had been engaged in tranquilisation of tigress Sundari in Satkosia today trampled to death its care taker on the premises of Purunakote forest range in Angul district.

Sudura Kumar Pradhan of Matia sahi area, who takes care of the trained elephant, was trampled while he was feeding the jumbo on the office premises.

“Yosada was tied nea rthe forest office. Despite restriction, Sudura came close to the animal fed her banana plant. The elephant snatched the banana leaf along with him with the trunk and trampled him to death, “Angul divisional forest officer (DFO) V Kartik said.

“Rs 4 lakh compensation has been approved for his family”, he added.

Yosada, a Kumki or trained elephant which was roped in the operation to trap tigress Sundari in Satkosia tiger reserve after tranquilising team found it difficult to track the big cat in the deep forest. However, with the help of the elephant, forest team managed to reach the tigress and successfully captured the royal cat.

The trained elephant was brought to the Satkosia forest in a truck from Chandaka sanctuary in Bhubaneswar on Friday to help monitor the tigress movement in the forest after experts team failed to trap the wild cat.
