Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to notify Hockey as our national game.
In a letter to Modi, the CM stated that while reviewing preparations for next world cup hockey to be held in Odisha in November, he was shocked to know that hockey has never been notified as national game.
“Hence I am sure you will agree with the crores of hockey loving fans of our country that hockey truly deserves to be notified as our national game. This will be a fitting tribute to the great hockey players who have made our country proud,” the letter read.
Patnaik further stated, in a first of its kind, Odisha is sponsoring the National Hockey Team for the next five years. Cutting across the rural and urban divide, hockey is hugely popular mostly in tribal areas of Odisha, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, he added.
Terming hockey as a part of Indian psyche, Patnaik remembered the presence of Indian hockey in international sphere till 1980 when Indian Hockey team became victorious and our national Anthem was played.
Highlighting the past glory of the game, Patnaik also mentioned country’s achievement in London Olympics for the first time.
