Bhubaneswar: The Odisha unit of Congress today donated Rs 20,20,504 to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund as a contribution for upgradation of Rourkela IGH to a super speciality hospital.
A delegation of the party leaders led by Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Niranjan Patnaik handed over the cheque at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
Earlier in July, the Congress legislature party (CLP) sought an appointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to donate a cheque for Rs 20 lakh, raised by the Congress in support of the proposed healthcare project.
Earlier in June this year, Congress president Rahul Gandhi slammed Modi for allegedly reneging on his promise of facilitating construction of a super specialty hospital in Rourkela and announced to raise funds after Muktikanta Biswal walked from Rourkela to Delhi to remind Modi of his promise.
Notably, Modi, during his visit to Rourkela on April 1, 2015, had announced that the Centre would upgrade Ispat General Hospital (IGH) into a super specialty hospital and medical college.
Muktikanta of Rourkela, walked over a 1,000 kms to meet PM Modi to remind him of his promise, but could not meet.
Meanwhile, Dilip Ray who was representing BJP in the Rourkela Assembly constituency resigned as the MLA and quit the party protesting the non-execution of Prime Minister’s promise.
