Bhubaneswar:Amid ongoing tussle with Chhattisgarh over Mahanadi water dispute, Odisha government has planned to set up seven projects including barrages and anicuts on Mahanadi in the downstream of Hirakud dam.
Similarly, 22 barrages will be constructed in the tributaries of Mahanadi to preserve rain water during monsoon. Total number of projects will be 29, Water Resources Secretary Pradeep Jena informed today at a presser. Irrigation and drinking water problems will be sorted out once these projects gets functional, he added.
The projects will be set up between Hirakud Dam and Paradip. The government had admitted that 52 per cent water of Mahanadi flows to Bay of Bengal while only 48 per cent water which is 22.948 thousand million cubic is being utilised in Odisha.
Around 48.732 thousand million cubic was flowing in the river out of which 25.783 cubic metre water flowing to sea in absence of adequate projects, Jena said.
