Puri violence: 13 more arrested; Gajapati appeals for peace

Puri: Police today arrested 13 more persons, taking the total number of those apprehended for their involvement in violence during Puri bandh.

Singhadwar police arrested five and rests were arrested by Town police station. The arrested persons include some local vendors and devotees’ middlemen.

They will be produced before the court of the sub-divisional judicial magistrate (SDJM).

Yesterday, 18 accused were arrested, who include two Sri Jagannath temple pratihari servitors.

Police have registered cases against 50 people including Jagannath Sena convenor Priyadarshan Pattnaik and bandh organisers Binayak Dasmahapatra, Bhabani Dasmahapatra, Damodar Mahasuar, Somnath Khuntia, Gopal Panda and Prasanna Dash following a complaint filed by Town police station ASI Jitendra Kumar Gumansingh.

Case against more persons is likely to go up as more evidence has been gathered after analyzing the CCTV and electronic media footage at various places of Badadanda.

Widespread violence took place during bandh observed by Jagannath Sena protesting queue system in Sri Jagannath temple.

In a related development, Puri Gajapati Maharaj Divyasingha Dev, who was out of State, appealed to public and Puri servitors, devotees to maintain peace in the temple town. He condemned the violence as unfortunate. He also demanded strict punishment against the law breaker.
