Raveshaw limps back to normalcy as students’ stir called off

Cuttack: Ravenshaw University in Cuttack is limping back to normalcy after the agitating students called off their strike following a discussion with varsity authorities.

The striking students said most of their demands were fulfilled and their discussion with the VC was fruitful. So, they decided to call off the protest.

After the protest was withdrawn, the sine die which is remained in force, is expected to be revoked by today or tomorrow.

Earlier in the day, VC Ishan Patro informed at a press meet that sine die will not be lifted until the students have withdrawn their agitation. Patro had convened a meeting with staff council at around 12 noon and discussed the situation.

The students under the banner of Ravenshaw Chhatra Kriyanusthan Committee resorted to strike protesting varsity’s decision to hike fee of courses and hostel.

They staged a demonstration and gheraoed VC’s office protesting the decision of university authorities to hike fee including that of the hostel, vacating hostels among others.

The agitating students demanded withdrawal of the notice ordering vacating of hostels. They also demanded withdrawal of fee hike decision, the appointment of a required number of permanent teaching staff, stop on an opening of courses on self-financing mode and convert self-financing courses into regular courses.

Later, students sat on a dharna demanding fulfillment of their demands. As situation remained tense, the varsity authorities had closed the institution sine die and asked the students to vacate hostel as early as possible.
