Trouble mounts for Maharathy; Mahila Congress scuffles with cops on way to CM’s residence

Bhubaneswar: The Mahila Congress today turned the heat on Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for remaining mute even after minister Pradeep Maharathy openly hailed acquittal of the accused in the gang rape and murder of dalit girl in Pipili.

Activists of the Mahila Congress today gave a tough time to police at Sishu Bhawan square while they were marching towards Naveen Niwas demanding Maharathy’s ouster from State Cabinet.

The women members of the Congress party led by their president Sumitra Jena scuffled with the police forces in their bid to barge into the residence of the CM. Police managed to take them to preventive custody. An activist fell sick during the scuffle between cops and the protesters.

The Congress protesters also threw tomatoes at the forces. They alleged the male personnel were engaged to suppress them. “The police failed to raise any concrete evidence in the court against the accused resulting in their acquittal. But, now they are showing their capability to suppress the women. This government is the killer of women community”, Bijaylaxmi Sahoo, senior Congress leader said.

Such agitation will continue till Minister Pradeep Maharathy is not removed from the Cabinet, said Mahila Congress president Sumitra Jena.

The Mahila Congress activists earlier had hurled egg and tomatoes at the official residence of Maharathy, demanding his resignation.

The BJP Mahila Morcha yesterday also scuffled with police in similar way just 50 metres away from the CM’s residence with same demand.
