India Intensifies COVID-19 Preparedness Amid Rising Cases

The Director General of Health Services (DGHS) Dr. Sunita Sharma led a series of technical review meetings on June 2 and 3 to assess the current COVID-19 situation and public health preparedness in India.


Current COVID-19 Status

- Active Cases: 4,302 active cases in India, with 864 new cases reported in the last 24 hours (as of June 4).

- Deaths: 44 COVID-19 deaths reported since January 1, 2025, mostly with pre-existing conditions.


Healthcare Preparedness

- Stockpiling Essentials: States advised to maintain stocks of oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators, and essential medicines.

- Mock Drills: Conducted on June 2 to assess oxygen supply systems, with system-level mock drills scheduled for June 4 and 5.


Surveillance and Testing

- Active Surveillance: State and district surveillance units monitoring Influenza-like illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) cases.

- Testing Guidelines: All admitted SARI cases and 5% of ILI cases recommended for testing, with positive SARI samples sent for whole genome sequencing.


Public Health Advice

- Precautions: Maintain hand hygiene, cover coughs, and avoid crowded places when feeling unwell.

- Seek Medical Attention: Monitor respiratory diseases and seek medical help if conditions worsen.
