Now, Chhattisgarh moves to make Ib dry, alleges BJD

Bhubaneswar: Even as the dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh over Mahanadi water sharing is yet to be sorted out, the neighbouring State has hatched another conspiracy to make the Ib river dry, BJD alleged today.

BJD general secretary Sanjay Dasburma said at a presser that Chhattisgarh government has started processing for construction of a bund on Maini river, the major tributary of Ib. It will help dry the Ib river which will affect the western Odisha mostly, he added.

The ruling party has called for a mass convention on April 15 where the future action plan will be chalked out. Ministers, MLAs, MPs, block and municipality representatives will take part in the convention.

“This is another conspiracy of Chhattisgarh to make IB dry. Brajrajnagar and other western Odisha towns will face acute water scarcity once IB dries up,”he added.

Several places in Odisha through which Mahandi passes have been affected severely as the river dried up due to closure of all 66 gates of Kalma barrage in Chhattisgarh, the BJD leader rued.

At a time, when formation of tribunal on Mahanadi dispute has not yet been done formally, the fresh move of the neighbouring State is like rubbing salt into old wounds, Dasburma said.

The Centre has not yet issued Term of Reference and other required infrastructure for setting up of a tribunal to resolve Mahanadi water dispute, he added.
