Bhubaneswar: The Prime Minister Narendra Modi today praised the ‘Manjhi’ of Odisha Padmashri Daitari Naik of Keonjhar district who carved out a 3 km canal from a mountain stream to deal with the irrigation problem of his village.
Modi, in his address on the monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, said the irrigation problem was solved in his village for the hard work of Naik.
Recently, he was selected for prestigious Padmashri award-2019 in social work category.
The 70-year-old dalit man of Baitarani village under Bansapal block in Keonjhar district came to the limelight after he made a canal by digging a hilly terrain in his village to provide water to his and others’ farm lands.
The elderly farmer had done the herculean task single-handedly. He took four years to complete the hard task with only his hoe and digging bar.
For his unwavering will power, he drew appreciation from all quarters.
