Two brothers get life term in woman judge murder case

Cuttack: Two brothers were convicted and awarded life term imprisonment by the Cuttack District and Sessions Judge on Wednesday for killing Odisha Judicial Service (OJS) officer Anupama Behera in Balasore in 2013.

The two sentenced persons were identified as Jyoti Ranjan Mohanty and his younger brother Priya Ranjan Mohanty. They were arrested by Balasore police on March 17, 2013.

The 32-year-old OJS officer, Anupama was not in good terms with her husband, who was a gynaecologist and posted in Puri district.
During her posting at a court at Ranpur town in Nayagarh district, she developed relationship with Jyoti, a clerk in the same court who was already married.

Anupama was transferred to Balasore where she was posted as process inspector and continued to remain in touch. In the meantime, Jyoti’s brother, Priya knew about the relationship and had become friendly with Anupama as well.

Of late, Priya tried to persuade the woman OJS officer to forget his brother, but failed.

Upset with Anupama’s relationship with Jyoti, the latter’s wife allegedly attempted to commit suicide, which led the Mohanty siblings plan the crime, police sources added.

Police said Priya, who works in a private company at Angul went to Anupama’s quarters in Balasore on the night of March 14 in 2013, and stayed there overnight.

Between 4 am and 4.30 am, he allegedly first stabbed her by a kitchen knife and then strangulated her using a pillow. He left for Angul after that, police sources added.

Her body was recovered by the police on March 16, 2013.
Later, during investigation when police interrogated Priya, he confessed his crime.
