Empowering women to take charge of their health, AIIMS Bhubaneswar has unveiled India's first portable 'Breast Self-Examination' (BSE) booth in the Department of Medical Oncology for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Located in a completely private setting, this innovative booth provides simple, step-by-step guidance to help women learn how to perform self-examinations and recognize early warning signs. Executive Director Dr. Ashutosh Biswas emphasized that catching breast cancer early dramatically improves treatment success.
Highlighting the urgency, Dr. Sourav Kumar Mishra noted that the department has treated around 1,000 patients in four years, seeing about 100 monthly visits—with a worrying rise in cases among younger women. AIIMS plans to establish this as a permanent fixture soon.
Beyond medical care, AIIMS focuses deeply on holistic healing. Yoga, meditation, exercise, and music therapy are integrated to support patients' mental well-being. Marking the inauguration, doctors, staff, and inspiring cancer survivors unitedly sang "Hum Honge Kamyab Ek Din," while survivors shared powerful stories of courage and hope.
Observed globally every October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month reminds us that early detection saves lives. Let's spread awareness, stay vigilant, and support one another in the fight against cancer!
