BJD’s Mahanadi stir meant to mislead people, alleges BJP

Bhubaneswar: At a time when BJD is bracing up to launch its third phase agitation over Mahanadi water issue, BJP today countered the ruling party’s move saying that such agitation is only meant to mislead people.

Addressing a press meet, veteran BJP leader Biswabhushan Harichandan said BJD is trying to mislead the people by launching its third phase agitation even after the formation of a tribunal. “

“Why the State government is not moving court to put an interim stay on the construction of barrages by Chhattisgarh in the upstream of Mahanadi? asked Harichandan.

“If court puts a stay on the construction of barrages, BJD would not go ahead with its agitation which it is staging to gain people’s sympathy,” he alleged.

Giving the example of Bamsadhara river ntroversy, Harichandan said

Supreme Court had put a stay on the construction of projects undertaken by Andhra Pradesh in 2009.

Now, the Chief Minister is mulling to construct barrages to meet the growing water crisis. “Did he take 18 years to understand the merit of barrages,”he asked.

Moreover, the tribunal has also asked the five States to send their representative for hearing of Mahanadi dispute. When the matter is already in the tribunal, why the BJD is taking to streets, the senior leader maintained.

Harichandan, a former Law minister further slammed the regional party saying that the party is resorting to such agitation due to lack of knowledge in Indian law system.
