Hirakud Dam Closes 4 Gates as Water Level Decreases

The Hirakud Dam authorities have closed four sluice gates following a decline in water levels due to reduced rainfall in the upper catchment areas of the Mahanadi Basin. Currently, water is being discharged through 16 gates, down from 20 gates initially opened on July 6.


Key Highlights:


- Floodwater Discharge: The dam released the season's first floodwater on July 6 through 20 gates, with 8 gates on the left and 4 gates on the right initially opened, later increased to 20 gates due to heavy rainfall.

- Water Level: The water level at Hirakud Dam stood at 609.45 feet on July 6 and has now decreased to 608.04 feet.

- Discharge Details: As of now, 4,33,491 cusecs of water is being discharged, while 2,33,824 cusecs of water is entering the dam.

- Impact: The first floodwater from Hirakud has reached the Mundali barrage in Cuttack, with 83,100 cubic centimeters of water released so far.


Current Situation:


- Reduced Rainfall: With rainfall subsiding, the dam authorities have adjusted the gate openings to maintain a safe water level.

- No Immediate Flood Threat: There is no immediate threat of flooding in downstream areas, but residents near riverbanks have been advised to remain alert.
