Bhubaneswar: The BJP government in Centre and Chhattisgarh has blocked the Mahanadi water, said CM Naveen Patnaik at BJD’s grand convention convened at party office here today.
He called upon the party workers and supporters to save the river which is the life line of Odisha.
“Mahanadi is getting dry day by day due to Chhattisgarh’s unilateral decision in constructing barrages and dams in the upper catchment. Though Supreme Court had ordered for formation of a tribunal which could resolve the dispute between Odisha and the neighbouring State, Centre is reluctant to cooperate with us,” Naveen said, asking party men to reach people with this message.
He said that the state government has launched a programme called ‘Green Mahanadi’ under which lakhs of trees will be planted on both sides of Mahanadi River to save it.
All the MPs, MLAs and chairman of all civic bodies and representatives from 15 districts attended the convention. BJD is preparing for its second phase mass movement against Chhattisgarh over Mahanadi.
Newly elected Rajya Sabha MP Soumya Ranjan Patnaik asked Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to struggle for the State. “If he wants to do something for the soil, I am ready to vacate my seat. He has done so many things for other States. But, this is the time to act for the own State,” Patnaik said.
On the other hand BJP’s Sameer Mohanty said that Patnaik’s Hindi speech is nothing less than joke. It is a plea to cover up his own inefficiency, he added.
