Collectors asked to act tough on potato hoarding

Bhubaneswar: In view of the stiff rise in price of potato, the government today directed the Collectors to act tough on hoarding and black marketing and ensure availability of the vegetable to consumers.

In letter to all district Collectors, the Food and Civil Supplies department today stated “You are requested to keep a close watch on the availability and arrival of potato in the market and ensure availability of the same to consumers at reasonable price. If required, action may be taken against the hoarders and unscruplous traders under the provision of Essential Commodities Act 1955”.

The letter further mentioned that less production of potato in the major producing States like West Bengal and UP has led to rise in price in our State.

The wholesalers can’t stock more than 500 quintals in Cuttack and 350 quintals in Bhubaneswar and other parts of the State, said Food Minister SN Patro.

Meanwhile, Supplies officials raided some godowns at Chhatra Bazar in Cuttack and inspected whether the wholesalers hoarded the tuber more than the limit.
