The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to undertake a comprehensive stray dog census in the capital city from September 17 to 24, marking a first-of-its-kind initiative in the state.


Census Details

- Coverage: All 67 wards within BMC area; street-by-street count.

- Phases: Two phases - Sept 17-20 and Sept 21-24; morning hours (5 am-7 am).

- Teams: 410 teams formed; supervised by qualified veterinary doctors along with Swachh Sathi, Sanitary Inspectors, Ward Officers.


Objectives

- Purpose: Determine stray dog population; check vaccination status.

- Outcome: Aid health/welfare of stray dogs; potentially reduce human-stray dog conflict incidents.


Implementation

- Training: Provided to teams involved in census.

- Supervision: Multi-level oversight including veterinary professionals, BMC officials.


The initiative reflects BMC's efforts toward urban animal management and public health considerations.
