Heavy rains in upper catchment areas have caused the water levels in the Sunarnarekha and Baitarani rivers to rise above the danger mark, leading to severe flooding in Balasore and Jajpur districts of Odisha. Though rainfall has moderately decreased, the plight of people has intensified with farmlands and houses inundated.
Affected Areas and Flood Impact
- Sunarnarekha River: 8 panchayats in Baliapala block and 6 panchayats in Jalaswar block submerged in Balasore
- Baitarani River: Areas in Jajpur district submerged despite receding water levels
- Affected Blocks: Basta, Bhograi, Baliapala, Jalaswar in Balasore; Dasharathpur in Jajpur; Bhandaripokhari, Tihidi, Dhamnagar in Bhadrak
According to Water Resources Department top engineer Chandrashekhar Padhi, the warning signal will be lowered this morning. The administration has made extensive arrangements to improve the situation.
