Odisha Makes Odia Signboards Mandatory for Commercial Establishments

The Odisha government has directed all commercial establishments in urban areas to display signboards with at least 60% of the content in Odia script. This move aims to promote and preserve the state's rich cultural and linguistic heritage while enhancing public convenience.


Key Highlights of the Directive:

- Applicability: All shops and commercial establishments under Municipal Corporations, Municipalities, and Notified Area Councils.

- Compliance Deadline: Verification by September 30, 2025, during trade license renewals and inspections.

- Incentive: Compliant establishments get a 5% discount on trade license renewal fees (available on SUJOG or Bhubaneswar.me portals).

- Penalty for Non-Compliance: ₹500 per day after a 55-day grace period for correction.


The Housing & Urban Development Department, led by Principal Secretary Usha Padhee, has instructed Urban Local Bodies to conduct awareness drives for shopkeepers and submit compliance reports within 60 days.
