The state of Odisha is currently experiencing a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring above 40 degrees Celsius for the third consecutive day. The capital city, Bhubaneswar, is no exception, with the temperature recorded at 32.7 degrees Celsius by 8:30 am today and humidity levels at 71.6%.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that most districts in Odisha will continue to experience intense heat until May 15. The day temperature is expected to rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius over the next three days, exacerbating the heatwave conditions.
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon has made its way to the Andaman Islands, bringing relief to the region. According to the IMD, the monsoon winds have advanced over some areas of the Andaman Sea, South Bay of Bengal, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The weather conditions are favorable for the monsoon's progression.
The IMD has forecast that the southwest monsoon is likely to hit Odisha in the second week of June, bringing much-needed relief from the scorching heat. Residents are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the monsoon, which will bring respite from the heatwave and rejuvenate the state's climate.
In the meantime, residents are advised to take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses. Some tips include:
- Staying hydrated: Drink plenty of water and other fluids to stay hydrated.
- Avoiding direct sun exposure: Try to stay indoors during the hottest part of the day.
- Wearing protective clothing: Wear light, loose-fitting clothes and use umbrellas or hats to protect yourself from the sun.
By taking these precautions, residents can minimize the risks associated with the heatwave and stay safe until the monsoon arrives.
