Same sex marriage: Kendrapara girls make pact for live-in relationship

Kendrapara: A same sex marriage has taken place in Kendrapara district for the first time ever since the Supreme Court decriminalised homesexuality last year.

Two women, both unmarried, moved to a local court for registering their live-in relationship.

Sabitri Parida (27) resident of Mahakalpada area in Kendrapara district and Monalisa Nayak from Pattamundai of the same district were studying in same class and later did job in one company in Cuttack.

Both were also staying together. Recently, they appraised their decision to live together to their family members. However, they didn’t get any support from the families.

Later, they moved to a local court and executed the agreement of marriage.

Advocate Asutosh Mohanty executed the agreement. He said the agreement they made was not against the law as the Supreme Court has already legalised homesexuality.

As they are major, their families have no right to oppose their relationship, he added.

In September last year, the apex court had abolished section 377 and decriminalised same sex relationship.
