Bringing good news for Central Government employees and pensioners, the Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved the formation of the Eighth Pay Commission. The Commission's recommendations will lead to a substantial revision of the salaries and allowances for Central Government staff.
Former Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai has been appointed as the Commission's chairperson. The body will also include IIM Bangalore Professor Pulak Ghosh and MO PNG Secretary Pankaj Jain as members.
According to Union Minister Ashwani Baishnab, the Commission has been mandated to submit its report within 18 months of its formation. Its recommendations are expected to take effect from January 1, 2026.
This decision is set to benefit approximately 50 lakh central employees and 69 lakh pensioners through revised pay and wages, likely by 2027.
