A catastrophic fire at Cuttack’s SCB Medical College has claimed the lives of 11 patients, leaving four others in critical condition. The blaze erupted on the first-floor ICU at 2:50 am yesterday, trapping 23 patients.
Despite a swift response from three fire engines, seven victims were recovered dead, while three others succumbed during treatment. Eleven staff members also sustained injuries during the chaotic rescue.
Casualties: Victims include Ramesh Chandra Parida, Dasaru Munda, and Menka Raut, among others.
Government Action: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi visited the site, ordering an immediate judicial inquiry and a technical investigation by the Fire DG.
Compensation: The state has announced ₹25 lakh ex-gratia for the kin of the deceased.
Investigation: Scientific teams are currently on-site, with a short circuit suspected as the primary cause.
While 15 staff members have been discharged after primary care, the tragedy has raised urgent questions regarding hospital fire safety protocols.
