Bhubaneswar: In a significant medical achievement, the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital has retrieved the liver of a 52-year-old brain-dead person for the fourth time, transplanting it into an ailing patient at another city-based hospital on Monday.
The liver was harvested from Hulas Dihudi, a security guard who suffered a severe brain injury after being hit by a biker on August 31 while walking at Chhatabar on Bhubaneswar's outskirts. Despite treatment, Dihudi's condition didn't improve, leading to his declaration as brain dead on Monday.
Donation Decision: Dihudi's family consented to organ donation, aiming to save other lives.
Organ Retrieval Process: SUM Hospital collaborated with State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) and National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) for the transplantation.
Medical Superintendent's Statement: Prof. (Dr.) Pusparaj Samantasinghar highlighted this as the fourth cadaver organ retrieval at SUM Hospital for transplanting into other patients.
BackgroundHulas Dihudi was admitted to SUM Hospital with traumatic brain injury and placed on ventilator support. His organs were donated after brain death, reflecting a noble gesture saving lives through transplantation.
