A massive crocodile sighted on a river island (tapu) in the Mahanadi river triggered a mix of panic and curiosity near the Mundli Barrage today. Forest department officials, who arrived promptly after being alerted by locals, identified the reptile as a long-snouted gharial.
Experts believe the crocodile emerged from the water to bask in the sun on the sandbanks due to the intensifying winter chill. While the sight drew excited onlookers, the Forest Department has prioritized public safety by prohibiting entry into the river in nearby areas.
Staff from the Bhagipur forest range have been deployed along the banks to monitor the situation and prevent any man-animal conflict. Residents living near the river have been advised to remain vigilant, as dropping temperatures often drive aquatic predators toward the shore.
