Incessant downpours from a low-pressure system have triggered an alarming flood situation in Malkangiri, leaving the district among the worst-hit in Odisha. Floodwaters surging over four major roads forced traffic suspension, stranding vehicles as authorities rushed food and drinking water to stranded drivers.
Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari reviewed the crisis with the District Collector on Saturday, confirming that health teams remain on high alert. Highlighting a recurring monsoon hazard, Pujari announced that funds previously sanctioned to elevate the submerged roads will now be utilized for permanent flood-mitigation measures ahead of next year's monsoon.
Chief Engineer of the Water Resources Department Dilip Rout noted that Malkangiri bore the brunt of the weather system. Heavy downpours lashed the region, led by a staggering 219 mm of rain at the Balimela Dam area, alongside 192 mm in Malkangiri and Chitrakonda, and 135 mm in Dabugaon. With weather conditions remaining severe, the administration is closely monitoring water levels and urging residents in low-lying zones to stay vigilant.
