The scorching heat wave in Odisha has prompted the state government to consider closing schools ahead of schedule. Revenue Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari has informed that a decision will be taken within the next two days to close schools due to the unbearable heat and humidity.
A proposal has been made to the Chief Minister to close schools earlier than the previously announced summer holiday on May 6. The Minister stated that a review will be conducted in the next two days, and instructions will be given accordingly.
The decision regarding summer holidays has been left to the discretion of District Collectors, who can issue Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and take necessary decisions.
The heat wave has been severe, with Jharsuguda recording a maximum temperature of 42.6 degrees Celsius, making it the hottest city in the state. Other parts of western Odisha and coastal Odisha are also experiencing heatwave conditions.
The state government is taking measures to mitigate the effects of the heat wave, and a final decision on school closures will be made soon.
