A wild elephant that suffered horrific injuries after consuming a crude explosive—commonly used as a "food bomb"—has died at the Kapilas Elephant Rescue Center. Despite the efforts of three medical teams, the animal succumbed to its injuries late Thursday night.

The elephant was discovered near Baluakta village in the Bantala forest with a shattered palate and severe oral bleeding. Officials confirmed the elephant had strayed from a herd of 51 migrating from the Hindol forest.

Angul’s Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) described the death as a result of a "mysterious and cruel" act. A high-level investigation is now underway to identify the culprits responsible for placing the explosives. "Strict legal action will be taken against those involved in this heinous crime," the DFO stated.

This incident has sparked fresh outrage among wildlife activists regarding the safety of migratory corridors in Odisha.
