In a surprise move, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his position on Monday, July 21, 2025, citing health reasons. He submitted his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu, effective immediately, under Article 67(a) of the Constitution.

Dhankhar's resignation letter expressed gratitude to President Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the Council of Ministers for their support during his tenure.

Dhankhar was sworn in as the 14th Vice President of India on August 11, 2022, with a term set to end in 2027. He has served for nearly three years.

Dhankhar cited health concerns and the need to prioritize medical advice as the reason for his resignation.

According to the Government of India, elections for the post of the next Vice President should be held before the end of the term of the Vice President. An early election is likely to be held to fill the vacancy.

To be eligible for the position of Vice President, a person must:

    - Be a Citizen of India

    - Have Completed 35 Years of Age

    - Be Eligible to be Elected as a Member of the Rajya Sabha

    - Not Hold an Office of Profit in the Central Government or State Government or in any public sector

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished Dhankhar good health and praised his service to the country.

There are speculations about the reasons behind Dhankhar's sudden resignation, with some opposition leaders suggesting that there may be more to his resignation than meets the eye.
