In a significant display of advanced surgical expertise, doctors at SUM Hospital, Sitalapalli, successfully removed a massive, complex neck tumor from a 32-year-old male patient, further expanding the hospital's super-specialty services.
The patient had been suffering from a progressively growing swelling for four years. Imaging revealed a large solid mass, measuring 9.7*6.5*13.6 cm, situated in the right posterior neck. The tumor was highly complex, extending into the upper mediastinum and dangerously compressing the trachea while lying close to vital structures like the carotid vessels and subclavian vein.
A meticulously planned multidisciplinary approach was adopted, involving the CTVS, ENT, Oncology, and Anaesthesia teams. The surgery was performed with careful, layer-by-layer dissection to ensure the complete excision of the tumor while preserving the carotid sheath and avoiding injury to the trachea and major blood vessels.
The surgical team included Dr. Sameer Panigrahi (CTVS), Dr. Priyajeet Panigrahi (ENT), and Dr. Sairudra Puhan (Onco Surgeon), with Dr. Pratyuaj Kanti Mishra leading the anesthesia support.
Mr. Deba Prasad Dash, Director, congratulated the team, stating that the hospital's success in carrying out complex, major surgeries for the first time in the Berhampur region reflects its commitment to delivering advanced tertiary healthcare locally. The patient is currently stable and recovering well.
