A massive fire in the heart of the Chilika sanctuary has left environmentalists reeling. Ignited last Thursday night, the blaze has consumed nearly 1 km of vital reed forest. Authorities suspect miscreants intentionally set the fire to flush out fish, a reckless act with devastating ecological costs.

Firefighting teams from Kanas, Tangi, and Gangadharpur are battling the inferno around the clock, while the DFO and ACF monitor the destruction via drone surveys. Despite these efforts, the flames remain uncontained.

The impact on Chilika’s delicate biodiversity is catastrophic. The salt marshes, home to rare aquatic species and exotic migratory birds, have become a death trap.

While reed fires have occurred previously, this scale of destruction exposes a glaring lapse in the sanctuary's security. Without stricter enforcement, the "heart of Chilika" remains dangerously vulnerable to arson and permanent habitat loss.
