Sushil Meher has officially resigned from his iconic role as 'Maharaj Kansa' in the world-famous Bargarh Dhanu Yatra, submitting his resignation letter to the District Collector and Dhanu Yatra Mahotsav Committee President.
Selected in November 2025 through a rigorous audition competing against 44 applicants, Meher was under a three-year contract for the open-air theatrical festival. However, citing mental distress caused by misleading remarks and controversies stirred by vested groups regarding his performance, he has chosen to take a one-year break for the upcoming 2026–2027 season.
Expressing gratitude for the immense public affection and respect he received during last year's 78th edition, Meher stated that his primary goal as an artist is to entertain. Despite widespread public support and petitions from various organizations urging his retention, he decided to step down to avoid further friction.
While leaving the door open for a future return—noting he would gladly accept if offered the role again later—the Dhanu Yatra Mahotsav Committee must now initiate a fresh selection process to find a new Kansa for the upcoming festival.
