The Odisha High Court faces a deepening crisis with a backlog exceeding 1,72,000 cases and a severe shortage of judges. Although the sanctioned strength is 33, only 17 judges are currently active. With upcoming transfers and retirements, active strength is projected to drop to 13, threatening to paralyze the state's judicial system.

The High Court Bar Association has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the Supreme Court Collegium over delays in appointments. During a general body meeting, the association resolved to escalate the matter to the President, the Chief Justice of India, and central and state authorities, warning of a massive statewide agitation if immediate action is not taken.

Additionally, concerns have been raised regarding the lack of Odia representation on the Supreme Court bench since 2018, echoing past legacies of distinguished Chief Justices from the state like Justices Ranganath Mishra, Gopal Ballav Patnaik, and Deepak Mishra. Stakeholders emphasize that resolving the High Court vacancy crisis is critical to restoring judicial efficiency and ensuring future representation at the apex court.
