A new cyclonic storm, named 'Ditwa', has developed over the southwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Sri Lanka coast. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts the cyclone will move in a north-northwesterly direction, paralleling the Sri Lanka coast before making landfall near the Chennai coast of Tamil Nadu.
The storm, which intensified on Thursday morning, is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to the Tamil Nadu and South Andhra coasts, with wind speeds reaching 60 to 70 kmph.
The cyclonic system is predicted to have minimal impact on Odisha. While partly cloudy skies are expected across the state on December 1st and 2nd, only the southern districts of Malkangiri and Koraput are likely to experience light rain. No heavy rainfall is anticipated for Odisha.
