Hirakud Dam Opens More Gates Amid Rising Water Levels, Heavy Rainfall Expected in Odisha

The Hirakud Dam authorities have opened four additional sluice gates, bringing the total to 12 gates currently discharging floodwater. As of now, eight gates on the left and four gates on the right are releasing excess water due to heavy rainfall in the catchment areas.


- Water Discharge: The dam is discharging water through 12 sluice gates, with 8 on the left and 4 on the right.

- Rainfall: Low-pressure rains have been lashing various parts of Odisha, creating flood situations in several areas.

- Weather Forecast: A depression in the north Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify and move towards north Odisha and West Bengal, bringing heavy rainfall to North, Coastal, and Interior Odisha until July 28.


- Red Warning: Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts are under red alert due to the possibility of very heavy rainfall.

- Heavy Rainfall: Mayurbhanj, Nabarangpur, Angul, Deogarh, Cuttack, Khordha, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Sambalpur, and Dhenkanal districts have experienced heavy rainfall accompanied by thundershowers in the last 24 hours.



- Flood Management: Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary precautions to manage the flood risk.

- Alerts: District collectors of downstream districts have been alerted, and public announcements are being made to warn residents about the potential rise in water levels.
