In a significant move, the Union Home Ministry has ordered a nationwide civil defence mock drill scheduled for May 7. This exercise, involving over 244 civil defence districts, aims to prepare citizens for potential emergencies, including air attacks.
The drill will involve district administrations, citizen security wardens, volunteers, home guards, National Cadet Corps (NCC), National Service Scheme (NSS), Nehru Youth Organisation, and students. Participants will receive training on emergency procedures, including:
- Air Attack Warning Systems: Emergency sirens will be sounded to alert citizens of potential attacks.
- Shelter and Safety Protocols: Training will be provided on identifying safe areas and procedures to follow during an emergency.
This exercise comes amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, following a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, which claimed 26 lives.
Historical Context:
This will be the first national-level mock drill since 1971. Those who witnessed the 1971 Indo-Pak war have shared their experiences, describing blackout practices, sirens, and panic among the population.
The government hopes that this exercise will enhance preparedness and response to potential threats, ensuring the safety and well-being of citizens.
