The brief monsoon lull in North India is about to shatter. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an urgent warning predicting heavy downpours and strong winds across 15+ states within the next 10 hours.
Driven by a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and the north Odisha-West Bengal coast, widespread rainfall will intensify over East, Northeast, and Northwest India over the next seven days.
Regional Forecast Breakdown:
East India & Odisha: A severe warning has been issued for Odisha, with isolated "very heavy" rainfall expected on July 16 and 17, creating potential flood-like conditions. Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Sikkim will see intense rain through July 18, while Bihar faces heavy showers until July 20.
Northeast India: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are braced for relentless, widespread rainfall from July 16 to 21.
Northwest India: The Western Himalayas—including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu & Kashmir—will witness heavy rain through July 21. Meanwhile, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh can expect a wet onslaught accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds (40–60 km/h) from July 19 to 21.
Central & West India: Chhattisgarh faces heavy to very heavy downpours today, spreading to East Madhya Pradesh by next week. In the west, the Konkan region and Goa will endure heavy spells until July 21, while Gujarat and Madhya Maharashtra will see scattered rain.
