The grand construction of the chariots for the world-famous Rath Yatra officially commenced in Puri following the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya. The process began at the Srinagar chariot mill with a traditional wood-worshipping ceremony led by the Maharana (chief carpenters) and Karti Sevaks.
The First Phase: Building the Foundation
The initial stage focuses on crafting the wheels, starting with the 42 tumbas (central hubs).
Craftsmanship: Artisans are currently cutting wood to precise measurements to form these hubs, which will later be drilled for the spokes.
Ritualistic Start: Following age-old traditions, temple priests performed the forest yatra rituals, and the Vishwakarma Maharanas were honored with the ceremonial tying of sarees.
Divine Blessing: The work was formally initiated with a golden axe after the moving idols of the deities were taken to Narendra Pushkarini.
The atmosphere among the Vishwakarma and Bhoi Sevaks is one of deep devotion and excitement.
As they shape the timber, prayers are offered to Mahaprabhu for a smooth and successful Rath Yatra, marking the start of a multi-phase architectural journey rooted in ancient heritage.
