A Maoist couple, identified as Unanga Kalmu alias Kishore and Mase Madhavi, surrendered to the Kandhamal police today. South IG Niti Shekhar confirmed the surrender, which took place at the Phulbani District Police Office.
The couple, originally from Sukuma district in Chhattisgarh, operated across Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and South Odisha, specifically active in the Bashdhara Ghoomusar Nagarul (BGN) division since 2018. They were involved in numerous operations in the region.
The surrendered duo stated they chose to join the social mainstream due to relentless police combing operations, recent casualties in police firing, and the government's rehabilitation policies.
IG Niti Shekhar urged other Maoists to surrender and return to normal life. Authorities also seized various Maoist materials from the forest.
