Bhubaneswar: Odisha is abuzz today, celebrating Kartik Purnima, also known locally as 'Boit Vandana' (Boat Worship) day. This ancient festival is deeply intertwined with the state's glorious maritime history and strong cultural traditions.
Marking this holy occasion, thousands of devotees gathered at various water bodies—ponds, rivers, canals, and the sea—since early morning to float miniature boats. This ritual remembers Odisha's historical seafaring prowess.
As they float the boats, people sing the traditional verse: 'Aka Ma Bai, Paan Gua Dath, Paan Gua Tora Masak Dharam Moro.'
Along with floating the symbolic boats, people are visiting temples to offer prayers for the well-being of their families. It is widely believed that a ritual bath and floating a boat on this specific day bring good fortune.
Extensive security arrangements have been put in place across key locations to ensure the safety of the congregating devotees.
