The Odisha government has scrapped the existing contract for the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Project, citing failure by contractors Sigal India and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to pay compensation as per rules. The project, which was stalled for eight months, will now see a new profile and Detailed Project Report (DPR) being prepared by an inter-ministerial committee.
The state government has cancelled the contract with Sigal India and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation due to non-payment of compensation.
An inter-ministerial committee has been formed to prepare a new profile and DPR for the metro project.
Union Urban Development Minister Tokhan Sahu informed Parliament that the state government has not proposed the metro project to the Centre, and therefore, Odisha's name is not in the list of 17 approved metro projects.
The metro will run for 26 km with 20 elevated stations, connecting Biju Patnaik International Airport to Trisulia Square in Cuttack, with a possible extension to SCB Medical College and Hospital.
The project is estimated to cost Rs 6,255 crore, with the state government bearing the expenditure for Phase 1.
The project is expected to be completed by December 2027.
