In a strategic move, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has appointed Vinod Jakhar as the National President of the National Students' Union of India (NSUI). The announcement, issued by General Secretary K.C. Venugopal on Friday, sees Jakhar succeeding Varun Chowdhury.
Hailing from Jaipur, Rajasthan, the 32-year-old leader is a close associate of Sachin Pilot and the first Rajasthani to head the student wing. Born into a humble family in 1994—his father is a mechanic—Jakhar rose to prominence as an Independent President of Rajasthan University in 2018 before joining the NSUI fold.
Key Highlights:
Political Ascent: Served as Rajasthan NSUI President in 2024.
Activism: Known for aggressive protests against the RSS and multiple jail terms during student movements.
Strategic Shift: The appointment is viewed as a calculated effort by Congress to strengthen its outreach among Dalit youth and the student community nationwide.
