The brutal lynching of Soumyaranjan Swain near Baliantar’s Ramachandrapur Bridge has sparked state-wide outrage and raised serious questions regarding law and order.
The incident followed a complaint by a young woman who alleged that Soumyaranjan and another youth intercepted her scooter, misbehaved, and tore her clothes.
As the situation escalated, an agitated mob reportedly tied Soumyaranjan’s hands and feet, hung him from bamboo poles, and beat him mercilessly—allegedly in the presence of police.
He later succumbed to his injuries. The complainant stated she survived only because locals intervened, though the intervention spiraled into fatal vigilantism.
Key Developments:
Police Action: Five suspects have been arrested under Case No. 212/26. Police are using CCTV footage to identify more attackers.
Government Stance: Chief Minister Mohan Majhi has ordered the DGP to take the strictest possible action against all accused.
Investigation: The Women’s Commission has recorded statements from both the complainant and the deceased’s family, promising a trial based on "proof and evidence."
While the allegations of misconduct are grave, the horrific "mob justice" that followed has shocked the capital, leaving the administration under intense pressure to ensure justice for all parties involved.
