India has achieved a significant defense milestone with the successful flight testing of TARA (Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation) off the Odisha coast. A joint venture between DRDO and the Indian Air Force, TARA is the nation’s first indigenous glide weapon system.

Developed by RCI Hyderabad, this low-cost innovation converts conventional, unguided warheads into high-precision smart weapons. Its primary advantage is its stand-off capability, allowing pilots to launch strikes from outside enemy air defense zones.

Once released, the bombs glide at high subsonic speeds toward land-based targets, making them exceptionally difficult to intercept.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the teams, noting that TARA mirrors global advancements like Israel's REST kit by extending strike ranges up to 120 kilometers.

This breakthrough significantly bolsters India's aerial combat power while maintaining cost-efficiency. By turning "dumb" bombs into "smart" precision tools, TARA ensures the Indian Air Force can neutralize threats with pinpoint accuracy and minimal risk to aircraft.
