A high-level probe has been ordered at VIMSAR, Burla, following the alarming deaths of seven pregnant women between the 1st and 6th of last month. The spike in fatalities over such a short window has sparked public outrage and raised serious questions regarding potential medical negligence.
Medical Superintendent Sanil Sharma confirmed that while some cases involved severe complications—including sickle cell disease and a botched unsupervised abortion—the rapid succession of five additional deaths remains under scrutiny.
The Health Department’s investigation aims to determine if these tragedies were a grim coincidence of "brought-dead" critical cases or a systemic failure in treatment. "We are reviewing every file; the truth will be clear once the report is finalized," Sharma stated. As the community demands answers, the hospital faces intense pressure to account for this sudden maternal mortality crisis.
